Sulawesi – Rituals, mountains and rugged coastlines

Trip type: Private tour with driver/guide Duration: 12 to 23 days tailor-made tour

Sulawesi is not an island that reveals itself at a glance. It is ruggedly shaped, culturally rich, and scenically impressive. Here, you travel not only through nature, but also through traditions that have endured for centuries.

From the seafaring culture of the Buginese in the south to the impressive Toraja rituals in the mountains, from quiet lakes in Central Sulawesi to colorful markets and tropical coastlines in the north, Sulawesi feels authentic and unpolished.

The cuisine is pure and local. Fresh fish on the coast, spicy dishes in the mountains, coconut, nutmeg, and cloves from the region. Here, you taste Indonesia without a filter.

From the moment of arrival, you will be carefully welcomed. We work with local guides who know the region, understand the culture, and take safety seriously. No rush, no unnecessary detours, but a logically structured route with room for experience.

This trip can be structured starting from approximately 12 days, extended to 14 days, or deepened to 23 days or more. Furthermore, Sulawesi combines perfectly with Java or the Banggai Islands for those who wish to alternate nature and tranquility with culture or tropical island life.

Daily program

  • Day 1: Arrival in Makassar

You arrive in Makassar, the gateway to South Sulawesi. The city breathes trade, seafaring, and history. Along the boulevard, you see traditional wooden phinisi ships that are still built just as they were centuries ago.

After a quiet start, we get our first introduction to the port and Fort Rotterdam, where colonial influences remain visible.

  • Day 2: To the coast of Bira

We travel south past rice fields and Buginese villages. Along the way, you see fishermen's houses on stilts and traditional wooden boats under construction.

Bira is known for its clear water and quiet beaches. Here, the pace slows down naturally.

  • Day 3: Island and sea

Today we explore a small island off the coast. Snorkeling, swimming, or simply enjoying the silence and the sea. The locals live simply here, close to nature.

  • Day 4: Heading inland

The route heads north. The landscape changes: the coast gives way to green hills and small villages where daily life largely takes place outdoors.

  • Day 5: The Temper Lake

We take a boat trip across Lake Tempe, where floating houses color the waterscape. Families have lived on the lake here for generations. It is a unique glimpse into a way of life that has hardly changed.

  • Day 6: Arrival in Tana Toraja

We reach the mountain region of Tana Toraja. The temperature drops, the landscape becomes more dramatic.

Toraja is known for its unique architecture and deeply rooted rituals. The characteristic tongkonan houses with arched roofs tell stories of generations.

  • Day 7 - 8: Toraja culture

We visit villages where traditional houses and rice barns are still in use. In the rock faces, you see carved tombs and wooden tau-tau statues watching over the valley.

Toraja culture is complex, and we approach these traditions with respect. You will learn about their view of life and death, without sensationalism but with understanding.

  • Day 9: To Central Sulawesi

The route to Tentena leads past mountains and vast lakes. We drive along Lake Poso, where the water is clear and deep blue.

Here, Sulawesi feels almost Mediterranean in atmosphere, but with tropical vegetation.

  • Day 10: Waterfalls and villages

In the surrounding area, we visit waterfalls in the middle of the rainforest. Small villages along the route showcase peaceful rural life.

  • Day 11: To Palu and beyond

We travel towards Palu, where the coastline is rugged and less visited. Here, Sulawesi reveals its pure character.

  • Day 12: Highlands and Da'a villages

In the highlands near Dombu, we take a walk to traditional villages where houses still stand on stilts and the culture is strongly preserved.

  • Day 13: To the north

The long drive to North Sulawesi is impressive. We cross the equator and see the landscape change from dry coast to fertile hills.

  • Day 14: Gorontalo

Gorontalo has a subtle colonial atmosphere. Markets full of spices and local delicacies offer a glimpse into daily life.

  • Day 15: To Manado

The route to Manado passes coconut plantations and small coastal villages.

Manado feels more vibrant and is the gateway to the famous Bunaken Marine Park.

  • Day 16: Bunaken

We reach Bunaken by boat. Here lies one of the richest underwater areas of Indonesia. Coral walls, colorful fish, and clear water make this a paradise for snorkelers and divers.

  • Days 17-21: Deepening or relaxation

This part of the trip can be tailored entirely to your wishes. Extra diving days, relaxation by the sea, or heading back inland for more culture.

  • Days 22-23: Return to Manado

After a quiet morning, we return to Manado and prepare for the return journey or the continuation to Java or Banggai.
