Tailor-made tours of Indonesia with a focus on Java, Sulawesi, and Banggai
Indonesia is not a country you can explore superficially. With more than 17,000 islands, it is one of the most diverse destinations in the world culturally, scenically, and climatically.
At Lankara Island Travels, we consciously choose depth. Our specialization lies in Java, Sulawesi, and the Banggai Islands—regions we have personally visited and experienced. This knowledge forms the basis of our tailor-made trips to Indonesia.
We do not design standard Indonesia packages. We build trips with structure, focus, and meaning.
Why Indonesia is so special
Indonesia is a land of layers and contrasts. A vast archipelago where active volcanoes, green mountain landscapes, and centuries-old temple complexes meet living traditions and daily spirituality. In many places, you feel that history here is not the past, but part of daily life.
The tropical seas are among the most biodiverse areas in the world. Clear waters, coral reefs, and remote islands make Indonesia special for those seeking nature and tranquility. At the same time, every island has its own character. Java feels different from Sulawesi, and Bali has a different rhythm from the Moluccas. It is precisely this diversity that makes a tour of Indonesia so multifaceted.
You will find pristine nature alongside vibrant cities. Mornings in cool highlands, afternoons by the sea, and evenings in historic city centers where old and new meet. Indonesia is not a destination you can “just squeeze in”; it requires attention and proper planning.
Distances are great, infrastructure varies by region, and climate patterns determine the best time to visit certain areas. What seems close on the map can, in practice, mean a full day of travel.
That is why we do not design overcrowded programs where everything is crammed in.
At Lankara, we build a tailor-made tour of Indonesia by region. Thoughtful, logical, and at a realistic pace. We consciously choose quality over quantity. We prefer fewer islands with more depth, rather than many destinations without cohesion.
This avoids a hectic itinerary and creates a balanced travel experience. A journey where nature, culture, and comfort are in balance.
That is how we approach Indonesia: with knowledge, respect, and personal attention.
Great cultural diversity
Impressive nature
Many island hopping options
Authentic local experiences
Java culture, volcanoes and history
Java is the cultural and historical heart of Indonesia. Here, religion, colonial influences, and nature come together.
Yogyakarta – cultural center of Java. Yogya is a city with a royal history and living traditions.
Here you will find:
- Borobudur (UNESCO World Heritage)
- Prambanan (an impressive Hindu temple complex)
- The Sultanate of Yogya
- Craft traditions such as batik
We recommend here:
- Sunrise or sunset at Borobudur with the right timing
- Cultural enrichment outside of massive tourist groups
- Combination of city, countryside, and temple area
Yogya often forms the starting point of a well-structured Java itinerary.
Malang – a quieter link in the route. Malang is situated at a higher altitude, has a cooler climate, and features colonial influences. It is less hectic than other Javanese cities and serves as a logical base for visiting the volcanoes.
Malang is not a highlight in itself, but a strategic stop within a well-balanced route.
Mount Bromo – impressive and timeless. Mount Bromo is one of Indonesia’s most recognizable landscapes. The vast sand plateau, surrounded by volcanic peaks, creates an almost otherworldly backdrop, especially at sunrise. But Bromo is more than just a photo opportunity. A visit requires proper timing and planning. The early start, the cool mountain air, and the route to the viewpoint make it a truly memorable experience. When accommodation, departure time, and weather conditions are well coordinated, it becomes an impressive part of your trip.
We have experienced Bromo ourselves and know how big the difference is between “being there” and truly experiencing it. The right order within your itinerary, sufficient rest stops, and realistic expectations make all the difference here. For many travelers, Bromo is a highlight of Java, provided it is carefully incorporated into the itinerary. As with all active components, we assess in advance whether it fits your travel style and physical capabilities.
Ijen Volcano – raw natural force. The Ijen crater is known for its turquoise crater lake and the rare “blue fire” phenomenon. This is a physical experience and not suitable for every traveler.
We always assess:
- Physical fitness
- Safety
- Weather conditions
- Balance in the itinerary
Tumpak Sewu – the most impressive waterfall of Java
Tumpak Sewu, located near Lumajang in East Java, is often considered one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Indonesia. What makes this waterfall unique is its semicircular shape, where dozens of streams cascade down a high cliff surrounded by tropical greenery and volcanic landscapes. A visit to Tumpak Sewu requires an active attitude. The descent is adventurous and sometimes challenging, but that is precisely what makes the experience special.
We visited this waterfall ourselves with an 8-year-old child. It was intense, sometimes challenging, but above all incredibly fun and impressive. Along the way, we also encountered travelers who even brought their dogs along—a sign that it is accessible, provided you are prepared. This is not an easy hike, but an experience. For nature lovers, adventurers, and photographers, Tumpak Sewu is an absolute highlight in East Java. As always, we assess in advance whether this activity fits your travel profile and physical capabilities. For nature lovers and photographers, Tumpak Sewu is an absolute highlight in East Java.
Sulawesi – culturally unique and lesser-known
Sulawesi is not a standard destination and requires regional knowledge.
I have personally visited and experienced Sulawesi. The island is diverse, culturally complex, and scenically impressive.
Tana Toraja – traditions and rituals. The Toraja region is known for:
- Elaborate funeral ceremonies
- Traditional Tongkonan houses
- Rock tombs and wooden tomb statues
Visiting this region requires cultural sensitivity. We work with local guides here who provide context and depth, so that you travel as a guest and not as a spectator.
North Sulawesi – nature and underwater world. Around Manado and Bunaken
you will find:
- One of the richest coral reefs in Indonesia
- Volcanic landscapes
- Tropical biodiversity
This region is ideal for:
- Divers
- Snorkelers
- Underwater photographers
- Nature lovers
- Perfect for everyone who loves tropical beaches and adventure
But logistics are crucial here. We build routes that remain feasible and comfortable.
Banggai eilanden
pure, remote and timeless
The Banggai Islands are among the most pristine regions of Indonesia. As soon as you arrive here, you immediately notice that the pace changes. This is not a destination where you “stay for a while.” This is a place where you slow down.
The atmosphere feels almost like stepping back in time. No mass tourism, no crowded boulevards. Sometimes you hardly encounter any other travelers in a day. Maybe one or two. No more. What you will find here:
- Helder turquoise water
- Limestone formations and hidden lagoons
- White beaches without resorts
- A rich underwater world
- Local communities where life is simple and sincere
Nature here is intense. Some bays are reminiscent of cinematic landscapes, as if you were in a scene from Avatar or Finding Nemo.
But Banggai is not a luxury resort destination. It is back to basics with character. Its strength lies in simplicity, tranquility, and authenticity. That is precisely why careful planning is essential. Logistics, accommodations, and timing require local knowledge and realistic expectations.
We ensure that everything is perfect down to the last detail so that you can fully relax and consciously experience this special environment. For travelers seeking peace, nature, and authenticity, Banggai can become the most memorable part of the trip.
