Family Adventure

Discovering together in a country full of color, culture, and nature

Sri Lanka is a destination that naturally brings families together. The island is compact, versatile, and welcoming. Within a few hours, you can travel from tropical beaches to ancient temples, from green tea hills to national parks where elephants roam free.

What makes Sri Lanka special for families is the rhythm. Distances are manageable, the people are genuinely hospitable, and children are welcomed with a smile. The cuisine is spicy and fragrant, yet accessible to young travelers. Fresh tropical fruit, mild curries, and simple rice dishes strike a balance between adventure and comfort.

From the moment you land, we ensure everything is just right. You will be personally met at the airport and escorted to your first accommodation by the sea. The first few days start deliberately relaxed, so that everyone can acclimatize at their own pace.

This family trip is a sample itinerary of approximately 14 days and can be fully customized to 12, 16, 21, or 23 days. We carefully tailor the pace, activities, and comfort level to your family.

Daily program

  • Day 1: Arrival in Sri Lanka & a relaxed start by the sea

Upon arrival at the airport, our Dutch-speaking guide will be waiting. No searching, no stress. Your journey starts immediately in a relaxed way.

We drive to the coast, where palm trees and the sea form the backdrop for your first impressions of Sri Lanka. Perhaps you will take a refreshing dip in the pool. Or perhaps you would prefer to walk along the beach as the sun slowly sets.

In the evening, you taste the local cuisine for the first time. Fragrant, colorful, and freshly prepared. A gentle introduction to the flavors of the island.

  • Day 2: Negombo & lagoon life

Negombo bears subtle traces of the Dutch past. A dead-straight canal and colonial influences are reminders of the VOC era.

In the morning, we visit the lively fish market. Tuna, swordfish, squid — everything is traded here or dried in the sun on large tarpaulins. Pure and authentic.

In the afternoon, we take a boat safari through the lagoon. Monitor lizards lie on the banks, birds fly low over the water, and monkeys move through the trees.

At sunset, we are welcomed by a local family for a traditional barbecue. With torches, music, and an explanation of how to eat with your hands according to custom, a warm first cultural encounter takes place.

  • Day 3: To the Cultural Triangle & elephants

We leave the coast and travel towards the cultural heart of the island. The landscape changes from palm trees to dry plains and jungle.

Along the way, we make a stop at Pinnawala, where you can see elephants up close. For children, this is often a first impressive encounter with these majestic animals.

  • Day 4: Sigiriya, the palace above the jungle

In the early morning, we climb the imposing Lion Rock of Sigiriya. King Kasyapa built his rock fortress here in the 5th century.

During the climb, you admire centuries-old frescoes, and at the top, a panoramic view of the jungle and water reservoirs awaits. A moment that stays with both adults and children.

Later in the day, colorful tuk-tuks drive us to a village by a quiet lake. We cross by boat and are welcomed by a family who have prepared a traditional lunch. You see how dishes are prepared with fresh coconut and spices from their own garden.

The afternoon is free to relax.

  • Day 5: Dambulla & on to Kandy

We visit the cave temples of Dambulla, where hundreds of Buddha statues and colorful murals adorn the rock walls.

In Matale, we stop at a herb garden. Here you will learn more about cinnamon, cardamom, and Ayurvedic plants that play an important role in Sri Lankan cuisine.

At the end of the day, we reach Kandy, situated in a green valley surrounded by mountains.

  • Day 6: Kandy, spirituality and tradition

In the morning, we visit the Temple of the Tooth, one of the holiest places in Buddhism. Drumming, flower offerings, and incense create a special atmosphere.

We explore the city on foot. Those who wish can visit the local market or look around a little longer on their own.

In the evening, we attend a traditional dance performance. The richly dressed Kandy dancers and the rhythm of the drums make a deep impression.

  • Day 7: Train journey through the tea region

Today we travel to the Highlands. We cover part of the route by train—one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.

Green hills, tea pickers in colorful saris, and wisps of mist between the mountains form the backdrop. In a tea factory, you learn how tea has been grown and processed for more than 150 years.

  • Day 8: Ella & heading south

In Ella, you set your own pace. Hike to viewpoints, take a cooking workshop, or simply enjoy the mountain village.

On the way south, we stop at the Rawana Waterfalls. In a local village, we see how pottery is still made in the traditional way, a craft that has been passed down for generations.

At the end of the day, we arrive in Tissamaharama, the gateway to Yala National Park.

  • Day 9: Safari in Yala National Park

We drive into the park in a comfortable 4x4 jeep. Yala is known for its high leopard density. In addition, you will see elephants, crocodiles, and countless bird species.

The open spaces often allow for observations without the feeling of crowds. A true jungle experience for the whole family.

  • Day 10 at 12 noon: Beach & colonial charm

We drive to the south coast and visit the 17th-century Fort Galle. Narrow streets, colonial facades, and views over the Indian Ocean.

After that, the beach stay begins. Snorkeling in quiet bays, walking along the beach, or optionally a visit to a batik studio or moonstone workshop.

We deliberately keep this part of the journey flexible. We listen to your wishes and help you think about how to shape it.

  • Day 13: Colombo

Colombo is developing rapidly and combines modernity with history. In the Pettah district, you discover colorful streets where every street has its own specialty.

Those who wish can shop a little longer or relax by the pool.

  • Day 14: Departure

Depending on the flight time, you will be taken to the airport. The room remains available until departure, so you can say goodbye to the island in a relaxed manner.
